About Métiers d'Art

Mel Ahlborn

The American artist’s passion for craftsmanship and modern glamour is on full display in her Carmel studio.

A Return to Glamour
Interiors have grown more considered for decades — architecture more exacting, furniture more deliberately sourced and built — while the art on the walls and the objects on the pedestals were too often left behind: decorative, disconnected, an afterthought to the room built around them.

Mel Ahlborn's work is a return to glamour in its truest sense — not ornamentation for its own sake, but art and object built with the same rigor, the same material honesty, the same craftsmanship as the architecture and furniture they are meant to complete. A wall built this well deserves a work that matches it. A pedestal built this well deserves an object worthy of holding it.

A Modern Atelier for Métiers d'Art

What sets this studio apart is training most contemporary practices no longer require: rigorous, formal grounding in the métiers d'art — the historical disciplines of gilding, painting, sculpture, and hand craft carried through generations of European ateliers. Form, concept, and material here are held to the standard the great traditions of art once demanded of every maker.

Ahlborn draws directly from that training, melding historical technique with an unmistakably contemporary point of view — not a departure from the tradition, but its continuation.

The Work Sets Its Own Schedule The atelier creates few pieces in a given year. Most are commissioned works — developed for a specific room, a specific collector, a specific occasion — rather than a body of work made in advance and offered for sale. This is not scarcity as a marketing device; it is simply how work of this depth gets made. A métier practiced properly cannot be rushed into volume, and this studio has no interest in trying.

Before The Studio

The artist’s interests trace back to childhood, spent among the beautiful churches of her youth. "Growing up, I was surrounded by adults who had strong beliefs in an unseen mystery," she recalls. "This had a profound effect on me. I was always asking myself what it was that they knew that I did not."

Becoming The Artist
That early experience shaped her influences as much as her subject matter: illuminated manuscripts, Crivelli and Mantegna, the Pre-Raphaelites, G.F. Watts, the occasional Symbolist. "The intricacy of medieval manuscripts intrigued me from an early age," she says. "Why would a culture so deprived of human comforts spend so many precious resources — gold leaf, lapis lazuli, vellum — on the creation and replication of ancient texts?"

Training To Be A Craftsman
Ahlborn’s formation was as rigorous as it was unconventional. She credits her parents for the gift of education and for encouraging her curiosity from the start; she completed undergraduate studies in chemistry and classics at Tufts University, with a minor in art history, and Boston's Museum of Fine Arts a frequent Saturday escape from coursework. A move to Los Angeles brought a new source of inspiration: the Getty Villa became a regular destination. An MFA in Fine Art Figure Painting followed, providing the rigorous discipline no amount of self-directed museum-going could — the anatomical precision and formal control that still underlie her work today.
